New Jersey Expecting to Win Sports Betting Ruling

Scott Morris | February 17, 2018

The process of legalized sports betting in New Jersey is almost complete. All signs from inside the State of New Jersey are that they are expecting a positive ruling from the Supreme Court.  They are expecting the ruling within a 2-10 weeks but are telling gambling operators already in the state to apply for their sports betting license now.

This development will bring about the end of Nevada’s current monopoly on sports betting. And this will be a domino effect. Dozens of other states are lined up ready to include sports betting in their betting offerings.

It all began in 2016 when then Governor Chris Christie was seeking ways to improve the State of New Jersey’s revenue. He saw that Nevada had some unfair advantages and decided to start a lawsuit challenging the federal government’s right to control state activities. The lawsuit is called Christie v. National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The lawsuit is considered a constitutional case. It states that the tenth amendment to the constitution is being violated by the federal government telling states that they cannot allow sports betting.

Actual Amendment Text

Amendment X
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people. more info on wikipedia.
