Ranking the Greatest NFL Coaches of All Time

There’s no denying that the National Football League (NFL), as with other sports, is a players’ league. However, with pro football well into its second century, there’ve been many iconic NFL coaches as well.
Names such as Bill Belichick, Vince Lombardi, and Don Shula. Bill Walsh, Andy Reid, George Halas, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, and Paul Brown are as famous as the great players they coached.
Halas, of course, is the father of the league, running the Chicago Bears (six titles) seemingly forever. Meanwhile, Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers won five titles and first two Super Bowls, with his name attached to the trophy.
Belichick and his New England Patriots won the Super Bowl six times in nine tries, while Brown ushered his namesake Cleveland Browns into the NFL. They were stalwarts in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) before dominating the NFL, with Brown (seven league titles) known as one of the great innovators of the game.
Shula ended with more wins (328 with the Baltimore Colts and two-time champion Miami Dolphins) than any other coach. Landry took the then-expansion Dallas Cowboys in 1960 and guided them over 29 seasons and two titles.
Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers won three Super Bowls over a decade, one fewer than the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Noll.
Reid is probably recognized as the best of the current coaches, winning 273 NFL games (between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs) along with three titles with the Chiefs.
If you’re really into old school, Curly Lambeau (they named the field after him) and the Green Bay Packers won six league titles over a 33-year career.
So, any number of candidates among the great coaches in the history of the NFL.
Who Is the Most Famous Coach in the NFL?
NFL news always seems to include the coaches, with pressure to win all across the 32-team league. Proof of that is the annual coaching carousel, 2025 with seven new coaches. That’s nearly one in four teams handing the keys to someone they hope is going to turn around the fortunes of the club.
That’s not necessarily a surprise, as NFL rumors had suggested there would definitely be a fair number of openings across the league.
The most famous coaches in the league, by contrast, probably never had to worry about job security. As was mentioned, names such as Belichick. Lombardi, Shula, and Halas are high on any list of great coaches in the history of the league.
Who Is the Highest-Paid NFL Coach?
If you want to be among the best-compensated coaches in the league, have some continued success in the NFL playoffs. It’s not news that Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs, of the six conference titles and three Super Bowl wins, is the gold standard in this category at $20 million per season.
Reid also won an NFC title with the Philadelphia Eagles, with a resume certainly better than that of any of the current NFL coaches.
