Sports Betting Takes a Hit in Georgia

The State of Georgia has been trying for some time to get sports betting on their books as a licensed and regulated offering. The most recent attempt fell flat on its face. On Thursday, both the amendment and bill failed to move forward to the state legislature.
Republican Lt. Gov Burt Jones is famously behind the bill as are many in-state businesses, including professional sports franchises. If the legislation did pass, it would allow residents of the state to vote on the matter. But it doesn’t seem like it will even make it that far.
The most recent failure won’t stop efforts to get it done, however. House Higher Education Committee Chairman Chuck Martin stated “It came in late and I guess people just weren’t there yet. We’ll keep working with people and trying to do what’s in the best interest of the state.” They are now eyeing November of 2026 as the next window of opportunity.
Proponents of in-state licensed and regulated sports betting champion the cause because it will bring a new source of income to the government. Many states have reaped the benefits of licensing fees and a % of the take which sports betting brings. Currently, 38 states offer some sort of sports betting to their residents.
