Feds Investigate Possible Point Shaving by Temple Basketball Player
Following the discovery of suspicious betting on an Owls game in March, Hysier Miller was connected to an FBI investigation.
Miller was the subject of a federal investigation on Thursday, according to ESPN, for allegedly point-shaving, which is the intentional attempt to score fewer points in order to avoid covering the spread.
Miller was the Owls’ top scorer in 2023–24 while playing guard. Miller never played before being dismissed by Virginia Tech on October 23 despite transferring there in the offseason for his senior year.
According to a gambling industry source at the time, U.S. Integrity had been keeping an eye on Temple games for some time.
In May 2023, U.S. Integrity and RealResponse established a tipline for coaches, support staff, and collegiate athletes to anonymously report gambling-related problems in real time.
Last spring, U.S. Integrity helped uncover the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball betting scandal that resulted in coach Brad Bohannon’s dismissal.
In particular, Thursday night’s game between the UAB Blazers and Temple, which saw UAB win 100-72, caught the company’s attention.
“We are aware they flagged it,” said AAC men’s basketball director of communications Tom Fenstermaker.
