Detroit Lions Favored to Win the Super Bowl First Time Ever
The Detroit Lions began life as the Portsmouth Spartans in Portsmouth in 1928 before moving to Detroit in 1934 and renaming themselves the Lions. Prior to the Super Bowl era, the Lions were considered a solid and consistent team, nabbing four NFL championships. These occurred in 1935, 1952,1953 & 1957. Since the Super Bowl era began in the late 1960’s however, they have yet to win it all, or even make it to the big game for that matter.
They are one of just four teams never to appear in the big game and one of twelve to have never won a Lombardi Trophy. These are the teams that have never won the Super Bowl. The number beside them represents how many times they’ve played in the big game.
Arizona Cardinals (1 appearance)
Atlanta Falcons (2)

That all may change this year as the Lions are the odds-on favorites to win it all in February of 2025. They have supplanted the Chiefs as favorites after crushing Jacksonville yesterday and with Kansas City losing their first game on the road in Buffalo.

The Lions have had some great stars pass through their doors. All-time great Barry Sanders played their 10 seasons before hanging up the cleats. Calvin “Megatron” Johnson put in 9 years there. RB Billy Sims played in Detroit and had an impressive career. Matt Stafford played the bulk of his career in Detroit before the big trade that sent him to LA.
Detroit could never seem to get everything clicking together at once. They would blow you out one weekend and look like the best team in the league and then lose to a terrible team just seven days later. But it looks like those days are gone, at least for the time being.
Detroit is 9-1 with their only loss coming at home to the Tampa Bay Bucs. But the thing that has fans believing that this is actually “the year” is that the fortunes of the team isn’t totally reliant on one or two players like years past. Case in point, QB Jared Goff threw 5 interceptions last weekend against Houston. 99 times out of 100 this would be an automatic loss for any team. But the Lions still managed to win. The defense managed four sacks and 2 interceptions and kept them in the game.
Is this the year that the Lions finally win it all? Or, will they at least appear in the big game? Don’t forget, Jared Goff has been there before. When he was with the Rams, he played against Brady and his Patriots, losing 13-3.
