Heisman Odds Change – Who is the New Favorite?
Unless you were living under a rock in the middle of the dessert (where there is no smart phone service), you have at least heard of the huge upset which occurred in the SEC this past weekend. The Tide were 23 point favorites on the road and lost 40-35. Alabama QB Jalen Milroe was the overall Heisman favorite heading into this game but the loss has caused a shift in the odds.
Milroe’s stats weren’t bad in this game. He threw 18-24 and 310 yards. He threw for 1 TD and 1 INT. He also ran for just 10 yards but did score a rushing TD. It was clearly not enough to get a win on the road and was the first time Vanderbilt has beaten Alabama here since 1976.
The Heisman favorite at the start of the season, Carson Beck, was +800 when the season began. He has not had the best year and lost to Jalen Milroe’s Alabama team the week before this past weekend. Beck’s two year career has been plagued by inconsistencies. He will have a few great games in a row which will lead you to believe he is the real deal. Then the next week he will throw 2 interceptions.
The new favorite to win the coveted trophy is Boise Sate RB Ashton Jeanty, believe it or not. Jeanty already has over 1,000 yards and 16 TD’s on just 95 carries in 5 games this season. His Broncos are 4-1 stright up, having beat Washington State and Utah State while only losing to Oregon by a field goal. Boise appears to be the real deal and their primary home run threat is this young man.
Colorado’s two-way player Travis Hunter is just behind Jeanty in the odds. This young man has played admirably on both sides of the football and has been a huge factor in the Buffs jumping out to a 4-1 record.
Travis Hunter Stats
Receiving
46 receptions – 561 yards – 6 TD’s
Defense
16 total tackles – 2 interceptions for 38 yards – 1 forced fumble
