Heavyweight Champ Tyson Fury is Now an Underdog for May Fight
Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk will duke it out in May and a shot for each fighter to become the undisputed champ. Fury currently owns the WBC title and Usyk has WBO/WBA/IBF titles. Fury vacated those belts when he stepped away from boxing after winning them in a 2018 fight against Wladimir Klitschko. According to SBA Boxing Odds Fury is sitting at -110 and Usyk is -120. The over under is 10.5 rounds.
It’s not like Usyk is the younger fighter looking to take the crown from the old veteran either. Usyk is actually a year older than Fury. He is 36 whereas Fury is 35 years of age.
Fury is bigger, has many more fights under his belt and many more knock outs. The only advantage on paper may be that Usyk is a southpaw. This unorthodox stance can present challenges for some fighters.
Fury’s Last Fight
The major reason why Fury is a slight underdog has to do with his last fight which occurred on September 23, 2023. He matched up against Francis Ngannou, a former UFC champion who decided to give boxing a try. The match was a disappointment for Fury as he was able to squeak out the win with a split decision. Many pundits cried foul and thought that Ngannou should have won.
Usyk’s Last Fight
Usyk’s most recent fight occured August 26th of last year. He knocked out Daniel Dubois who only had one loss and 22 wins coming into that fight. Previously, Usyk was able to defeat Anthony Joshua when he last fought back in 2022. He also fought Joshua the year prior and defeated him.
