The Latest Before the NBA Trade Deadline
Unlike last year, the 2024 NBA trade deadline will probably pass minus any huge blockbuster deals. A year ago, Kevin Durant went from Brooklyn to Phoenix as part of a mega trade that involved four teams. With Pascal Siakam, O.G. Anunoby, and James Harden already traded to new teams, there aren’t many big names left that have a strong possibility of being traded by deadline day. Teams have until 3:00 p.m. Thursday to make any moves.
Here’s a look at what could happen by the trade deadline.
Dejounte Murray to ?
It has come up time and again that Atlanta guard Dejounte Murray is on the trading block. The Trae Young-Murray experiment hasn’t panned out for the Hawks even though Murray just finished January averaging 23.7 points per game. Murray has been linked to the Lakers, but the Lakers and Hawks are just too far off from each other.
The Lakers don’t want to give up Austin Reaves and Atlanta isn’t really interested in D’Angelo Russell. Plus, Russell has done exactly what Murray has done in Atlanta. Russell averaged 22.7 points a game in January. It’s more likely that Murray stays put in Atlanta…at least for the rest of this season.
Sixers, Mavs Looking
It’s no secret that the Mavs would like another wing to add to the mix and solidify Dallas’ hopes as a true contender in the Western Conference. Rumors put Golden State’s Andrew Wiggins in the mix, but we’ll talk about him later. Dallas is more interested in Washington’s Kyle Kuzma.
The Wizards are going nowhere this season and are a likely seller at the trade deadline. Kuzma is Washington’s leading scorer with 21.8 points per game. The problem with a deal for Kuzma is that the Wizards want too much for him. That could change.
The Sixers will be without Joel Embiid for the foreseeable future. Even with the reigning MVP in the lineup, Philly would love a No. 3 to go along with Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. The Sixers have their eyes on Pacers guard Buddy Hield (12.0 ppg) or Pistons SF Bojan Bogdanovic (20.2 ppg). Whatever happens, Philly wants to keep Tobias Harris, which might make it easier to land Hield.
Wiggins on the Move?
We mentioned Wiggins earlier. His name has come up a lot in recent trade rumors. Dallas would like a player with Wiggins’ skill set, but not actually Wiggins. The Lakers forward has struggled this season. He’s playing the fewest minutes per game of his career and averaging just 12.2 points per game. That’s his lowest season average by nearly five points per game.
With Dallas out of the mix, there is some interest in Milwaukee and Indiana. The Pacers just recently acquired Pascal Siakam though and Wiggins might not fit with the Pacers now. Milwaukee would love to have Wiggins on the wing, but like Indiana, the Bucks trades for Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday complicate things. Milwaukee doesn’t have a lot of draft capital. Plus, they would probably have to give up Bobby Portis, which is something they don’t want to do.
Trades Completed
There have been a few deals made just this week right before Thursday’s trade deadline. The Boston Celtics acquired Xavier Tillman from Memphis on Tuesday. Boston gave up two second-round draft picks for Tillman.
Also on Tuesday, Detroit acquired Simone Fontecchio from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Kevin Knox, a 2024 first-round draft pick, and the rights to 2022 second-round pick Gabriele Procida. Fontecchio averages 8.9 points per game and shoots 39.1 percent from behind the three-point line this season.
