Lowest College Football Betting Totals of All Time

Scott Morris | November 24, 2023
Lowest Over Unders in college football history

For each college football game there are a myriad of ways to bet. But the two most popular ways are the “side” and the “total”. Betting the side simply means picking which team will cover against the spread. The total is also known as the “over/under” and is the total points of the combined score of the entire game. People can wager whether the game’s total points will land over or under that number.

This week marks a historical game in regard to the total (over/under). The Nebraska vs Iowa game total came out at 27.5 points. It has since been bet down to 24.5 points. The opening line was already the lowest in history and then it went even lower. Earlier this season, the Rutgers vs Iowa game become the lowest of all time when it dropped to 28.5 before game time after having opened at 33.5 points.

How They Create the Total

There is no real magical formula for creating totals. It’s a simple formula:

  1. Add total points per game average for both teams
  2. Add total points per game allowed for both teams
  3. Divide by two

Usually that will be the number which is issued unless there is an expectation of inclement weather. Sportsbooks may lower it a few points before issuing it. Then the public can have at it. The way they bet ultimately controls which way the number moves. In basketball games you will often see the exact number issued based on the formula above. This is because they play indoors where weather is not an issue.
