2023 Cincinnati Bengals Season Preview and Betting Odds

Scott Morris | August 25, 2023
Joe Burrow

The Cincinnati Bengals started the 2022 season with close losses against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys. Fans had only begun to lose hope when they made just the comeback they needed. An eight-game winning streak had them end the season with quite the record of 12-4 (one game was cancelled) earning them the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs.

They were in luck for the season and remained victorious in the Wild Card Round, owing to Sam Hubbard’s 98-yard return against the Baltimore Ravens, as well as in the Divisional Round against the Buffalo Bills. They had managed to make it to the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. They were fighting for the title against the Chiefs for the second time in a row now and as close as the game was throughout, Joseph Ossai’s penalty led to their defeat as the Chiefs won with only eight seconds remaining in regulation.

2023 Season Preview

The 2023 offseason was a good one for the Bengals. They decided to not keep up with their tradition of not spending a lot in free agency and signed a very expensive Orlando Brown. The offensive tackle received a signing bonus of $31 million along with his whopping salary of $16 million a year. As much as this cost them, it may be their best move of the offseason. They also made moves to replace departing players Jesse Bates III, Vonn Bell and Eli Apple. For the next season, safety Nick Scott and cornerback Sidney Jones will be filling their place in the roster.

The team planned to take advantage of the 2023 draft to take care of the critical needs at the defensive end and that is exactly what they did when they picked Myles Murphy and DJ Turner in the first two rounds. Wide receiver from Day 3, Charlie Jones also seems like a steal for the team and hopefully he proves it to be. The Bengals had quite a good offseason and they know it.

What the team now needs to focus on is center depth. As solid as Ted Karras’ addition was last season, he doesn’t have all the means now for it to be considered solid anymore. Same is the case with the secondary, which needs major improvement. They need skill but more importantly, experience and they must do something to address the issues before the 2023 season begins.

As long as Joe Burrow, along with other key players, is present on the roster at the top of his game, there is not much that can stop the Cincinnati Bengals from being contenders. They are one of the league’s elite and they have earned their place. All they are looking for is a title to their name. They’ve made it to the Super Bowl before and they can do it again but this time around they might have the complete roster to make sure it ends only in victory.
