Manchester City’s Premier League Dominance
Manchester City are on the verge of winning their third premier league title in a row and it will be their fifth title in just six seasons unless they do not bottle it. Pep Guardiola came to City at the start of the 2016/17 season and was expected to win the title as he had the players to do so, the likes of Vincent Kompany, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, and the man whose name Martin Tyler shouted during the last seconds of the 2011/12 season as he won them the title, Sergio Aguero. Pep came after he spent three seasons at Bayern Munich where he won the league each year but continuously got knocked out in the semi-finals of the champions league.
Pep Guardiola’s city journey up until now
Pep’s first season with Manchester City did not go as planned; he finished only third in the premier league with seventy-eight points, behind Tottenham Hotspurs and Chelsea. They did not win anything that year and did not even qualify for quarters of the UCL. They were knocked out by Monaco as Mbappe and Co. turned around a 5-3 deficit in the second leg. After that, it felt like Pep took it personally, and in the next season, Pep coached City to hundred points in the league. That team is known as the “Centurion” team. They only lost two games that season, and one was that famous game against Liverpool that ended 4-3. Klopp kept getting the better of Pep that season as he defeated him three times in all competitions as two losses came in the quarterfinals of the UCL Liverpool defeated City 5-1 on aggregate and went on to reach the final, where they lost to Real Madrid. The next season it felt like it would be a battle of Klopp’s Liverpool and Pep’s City again and it lived up to heights as City won by just one point on the last day of the season. Liverpool finished with ninety-seven points and still their name was not written on the titles. Had Pep not been there Klopp would have had so many more Premier League titles. Although Liverpool did win the UCL that season and before the start of the next season Pep joked that next season maybe they can switch the trophies. Next year Liverpool did get their hand on the league title, but City again disappointingly got knocked out in the quarters of the Champions League. City went on to win the next two league titles again, but it was always the Champions League that eluded them.
UCL disappointments
In the 2020/21 season, they came so close as they reached the final but lost to Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. The next year they met Real Madrid in the Semi-finals and as everyone knows Madrid is a different breed in the UCL and they got the better of City over two legs.
Overall
This season City is again going to win the Premier League unless a miracle happens. The City is also in contention for the UCL as they would be feeling that they have a better chance to advance over Madrid. Pep has made the Premier League, as people say, a “farmer’s league”. He is winning back-to-back titles in a league that is known as the most competitive league. He now just needs to win UCL to satisfy himself as he has won every domestic competition there is.
