Sportsbook: “Uneventful Week, Calm Before the Storm”
This past weekend featured the Pro Bowl, which is a dud for fans and sports bettors alike. The game receives very little action because there is now real way to handicap an exhibition game. The usual lineup of college and NBA basketball helped the sportsbooks achieve some profitability, however, without the help of a real football game. “Pretty uneventful week, the calm before the storm. We won a little money as a book but it was a pretty average week. Everyone is just getting geared up for the Super Bowl. All the public money so far is on the Patriots.”- Linesmaker Brian from popular online sportsbook YouWager.eu commented.
The Super Bowl handle is expected to break records this year as more and more people get into sports betting. The lopsidedness of the Super Bowl betting will be either a huge windfall for sportsbooks or giant punch in the gut. Sportsbooks, both on and offshore, are receiving record betting amounts on Patriots (spread and moneyline). It may be hard to layoff action, in order to balance the action, if everyone is loaded down with Patriots money.
The sportsbooks usually do pretty well with prop bets though. So, even if they get torched by the Patriots, a good prop betting day could help save the day (SBA will be releasing our prop selections at the end of this week, check back). According to head linesmaker George at YouWager, there are three very popular props being bet early: “A lot of Gronk to be the first score, second half being a higher score than the first half. Lot of will game go to over time? yes bets.”
