Early Look at AFC East

Scott Morris | June 25, 2017

The 2017 NFL regular season is just over two months from its opening kickoff. The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots are favored to win the AFC East, the AFC Championship and Super Bowl LII.

The Patriots have dominated the AFC East winning eight straight division titles and 14 of the last 16 overall. Last season New England was 14-2 straight up and 13-3 against the spread.

Division rivals Miami were 10-6 SU and 9-7 ATS, Buffalo 7-9 SU and 6-10 ATS and the New York Jets 5-11 SU and 6-10 ATS.

New England is favored to win its ninth straight AFC East title at 1 to 12. Miami is 8 to 1, Buffalo 15 to 1 and the NY Jets 75 to 1.

Odds makers win totals for AFC East:

  • New England 12.5 – Over (-115), Under (-115
  • Miami 7.5 – Over -235), Under (+105)
  • Buffalo 6.5 – Over (-115), Under (-115)
  • New York 5.5 – (+135), Under (-165)

Last season Buffalo flew out of the starting gate and was 4-2 after six weeks of play with three of the wins against opponents from the NFC West. However, over their final 10 games, the Bills covered the number just twice, with one cover coming against lowly Cleveland.

Miami started its season 1-4 but was able to win 9 of its final 11 games to finish with 10 wins. However, only one win was against a team that reached the playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New England allowed 28 points to the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. That amount was the second most the Patriots allowed all season. Since 2014, the Patriots are 3-5 SU while 2-6 ATS when allowing 28 or more points per game.

New York defeated the Bills twice and the Ravens, Browns and 49ers. In New York’s 11 games as a dog last season, the Jets were 2-9 SU and 3-8 ATS.

Super Bowl LII Odds for AFC East teams:

  • New England 17 to 5
  • Miami 60 to 1
  • Buffalo 90 to 1
  • New York Jets 150 to 1
