Quick Opening Look at AFC and NFC Title Trends

Scott Morris | January 16, 2017

Just four teams remain in the NFL. The divisional round of the playoffs is now behind us and the AFC and NFC Championships are next.

Here is a quick look at some of the numbers for the AFC and NFC title games.

AFC Championship

Pittsburgh at New England (-6)

New England opened as 6-point chalk for the AFC title game, while the over/under point total opened at 50.5.

Pittsburgh on the road this season is 6-3 SU and ATS. At home this season, New England is 7-2 SU and ATS.

New England beat Pittsburgh 27-16 during Week 7 of the season, but Ben Roethlisberger the star quarterback for the Steelers did not play due to an injured knee.

AFC Title Trends

The favorite has covered the number in 5 of the past 8 AFC Championship games. However, the dog has covered 3 of the past 5. The UNDER has cashed in the past 5 straight, which followed a run of the OVER cashing in 6 of 7.

At home, New England in its last three AFC title games is 1-2 SU and ATS. Overall, in its last five AFC title games, New England is 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS.

This is Pittsburgh’s first AFC title game since 2011. In that game, the Steelers beat the New York Jets. The Steelers are 3-0 SU and ATS in their past three AFC title games.

NFC Championship

Green Bay at Atlanta (-4)

Atlanta opens as a 4-point favorite at home against Green Bay. The point total opened at 58.5 but is already up to 60 and even 61 on some sportsbooks.

On the road this season, Green Bay is 6-4 straight up and against the spread. At home, Atlanta is 6-3-1 SU and 6-4 ATS.

Head to head during the season, Atlanta beat Green Bay 33-32 during Week 8, but did not cover as 3-point home chalk.

NFC Title Trends

The favorite is 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in the past four NFC title games. The Packers are 1-1 SU in their past two NFC title games losing at Seattle in 2014 and winning at home against Chicago in 2010.

Atlanta lost to San Francisco 28-24 in its last trip to the NFC Championship in 2012.

The OVER has cashed in 3 of the past 4 NFC title games.
