Point Spreads at Sportsbooks
Most North American facing sportsbooks use the point spread system. This is a method to make the bet as even as possible, no-matter how much better one team is than the other. The gambler can then pick the team plus or minus the points and wager his money.

More About Sportsbooks
The ability to bet on a sporting event in an official manner in the United States began in 1949. The Las Vegas Turf Club was the first official sportsbook. Before that, betting was mostly illegal or informal. These early spots, called Turf Clubs, operated separately from casinos under a deal that kept them profitable despite high fees to cover taxes. This paved the way for sports betting in Las Vegas, which later moved into casinos in the 1970s.
The modern online sportsbook began in 1996 with Intertops sportsbook, today known as EveryGame.eu. Not long after Intertops came many other online sportsbooks like GameDay & BetonSports (both located in Central America) and UK based books like PaddyPower.
Now there are a myriad of sportsbooks which can be found online, all of which offer a mobile app that you can download. You cannot watch a single sporting event today without seeing multiple sportsbook ads. The online and app-based sportsbook has become as ubiquitous as anything in modern culture.
